We asked the nation what they thought about teaching as a career – here's what they said

With the CAO change of mind deadline coming up, it is a profession worth considering.

WE ASKED PEOPLE across Ireland to share stories of the teachers who made a difference in their lives and whether or not they thought it was a rewarding profession. Their answers were heartfelt, inspiring, and deeply personal. Standing in Dublin on a busy afternoon, we met people from all walks of life. Whether from different nationalities or backgrounds, each person we stopped had a story about a teacher who saw potential in them, guided them through tough times, or helped spark a lifelong passion. They all agreed that teaching was a wonderful option as a career, due to the benefits such as annual leave, competitive salary and career progression. Not to mention the huge positive impact they can have on young lives.

The personal anecdotes shared in our video are a powerful reminder of the unique role teachers play. They don’t just teach subjects; they help shape lives.

A career that changes lives

Every day, teachers across Ireland guide students to discover their strengths, overcome challenges, and prepare for a bright future. But teaching doesn’t just transform students’ lives; it transforms the teachers themselves.

For young people across Ireland, newcomers to the country or anyone at a crossroads in their lives, a teaching profession is a dynamic, rewarding and surprisingly well-compensated option. Teachers in Ireland start on a salary of €44,435 for primary level (rising incrementally to €81,930) and €45,829 for post-primary level (rising incrementally to €83,439).

The competitive salary isn’t the only benefit. Teaching offers generous leave entitlement, providing time for personal interests like travel, or family. With the whole summer off every year, that alone is an attractive prospect. The work-life balance generally is quite healthy. With structured hours and ample leave, teaching gives you the best of both worlds between professional and personal life.

The continuous development in your career offers a great sense of purpose: Few careers offer the daily opportunity to make a lasting impact on young lives. Teachers often describe the profession as immensely fulfilling.

Different backgrounds, different perspectives

Classrooms today are vibrant, dynamic places where a variety of backgrounds and experiences not only come together, but they thrive. Many who choose teaching find that their own unique journey enriches not only their teaching, but also their pupils’ learning. That’s why teaching is a great career no matter what your experience or background is. With greater accessibility and opportunity, schools are welcoming people from traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education to consider applying. A broader and more representative teaching workforce is one that can foster an environment where everyone can contribute to shaping the future.

Make an impact

Many of us can name the teacher who saw something in us that we didn’t yet see in ourselves. Now, you have the opportunity to be that person for someone else.

If you’re still deciding your CAO choices, or thinking about changing careers, teaching might be the path that allows you to inspire the next generation while building a rewarding life for yourself.
